Classroom Teachers
Kindergarten Teacher (M, W, F only)
Ambleside’s Kindergarten teacher should enjoy working with young children at various developmental stages. Background in phonics or math for young children preferred. Patience and consistency are most valuable qualities. Preparation outside of school approaches two hours a day (10–15 hours a week).
First Grade Teacher (M–F)
The First and Second Grade teachers should demonstrate knowledge of phonics and elementary math. Knowledge of phonics, based on the Orton-Gillingham phonograms, is helpful. Experience teaching this age group is preferred. Preparation outside of school approaches two hours a day (10–15 hours a week).
Second Grade Teacher (M–F)
The Second Grade teacher should demonstrate knowledge of phonics and elementary math. Knowledge of the phonics, based on the Orton-Gillingham phonograms, is helpful.
Third and Fourth Grade Teacher (M–F)
The Third and Fourth Grade teachers should have a strong background in phonics and elementary math (long division and multiplication, operations with fractions). Knowledge of phonics, based on the Orton-Gillingham phonograms, is helpful. Ability to solidify handwriting, spelling, and reading skills is important. Background in history, grammar, and science is helpful. Preparation outside of school approaches two hours a day (10–15 hours a week).
Fifth and Sixth Grade Teacher
Knowledge of upper elementary math (fractions, decimals, and percents), grammar, and composition is essential. Ability to edit writing and inspire writers is important. Knowledge of pre-algebra and background in history, science, and literature is helpful. Preparation outside of school approaches two hours a day (10–15 hours a week).
Seventh and Eighth Grade Teacher
Knowledge of grammar and composition is essential as is the ability to and inspire writers. Ability to study dense texts, especially in the subjects of history, science, and literature, and lead effective classroom discussions is important. Teachers in the middle school must be willing to invest in adolescent teens relationally, academically, and spiritually both inside and outside of school hours. Preparation approaches two hours a day (10–15 hours a week) outside school hours.
Special Subject Teachers
Art Teacher (approximately 9 hours/week)
The Art instructor should have training in art. Instruction focuses on building specific skills rather than creative explorations. Crafts are not part of our program. Experience teaching students in grades K – 8 is preferred.
Spanish Teacher (approximately 9 hours/week)
The Spanish Instructor must have fluency in the language, ability to teach in Spanish, and a strong emphasis on the development of oral fluency. Experience teaching students in grades K–8 is preferred; experience teaching Spanish I is a plus.
Physical Education Teacher (approximately 3 hours/week)
The PE instructor should have the ability to train students in life sports, foster good sportsmanship, and maintain discipline and appropriate habits of relating. Experience teaching children in grades K-8 is preferred.
