Ambleside School’s Shakespeare Festival includes a performance of sonnets, songs, and dance by the lower grades. The evening culminates in a performance of a Shakespeare play by the 7th and 8th Grades. This past year, our Shakespeare Festival concluded with The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.
“To become intimate with Shakespeare in this way is a great enrichment of mind and instruction of conscience. Then, by degrees, as we go on reading this world-teacher, lines of insight and beauty take possession of us, and unconsciously mould our judgments of men and things and of the great issues of life."
- Charlotte Mason
Every Friday at 8:20, the school gathers for morning chapel. Parents are welcome to attend.
Coffee with Charlotte Mason
This is a casual gathering at Ambleside held about once a month after morning carpool. Our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Roberts, leads parents in reading and discussing a selection from Charlotte Mason’s work. The discussion helps parents to understand how these principles may be applied in the classroom and at home. Coffee and light morning refreshments are served. No preparation is required and childcare is provided. (A small donation is suggested for the babysitter). Typically, this gathering is held monthly on Thursday mornings.
Dinner with Dr. Leonard Sax
March 15th | 5:30 - 9:00 pm
On Friday, March 15th, parents, neighbors, and friends of Ambleside School gathered to celebrate the value of a Charlotte Mason education at Valo Park, a granite and glass conference venue nestled by a lake. The evening was a time for parents to visit and share a laugh, see the new Ambleside School video from Sparrow Websites, ask their parenting questions, and enjoy hearing about ways they can strengthen the odds that their children will build resilience and thrive as they go through high school and college.
For over fifteen years, Dr. Sax has been speaking to parents' groups and working with students in the United States, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland. His books are available now in our school office. We were excited to hear Dr. Sax share his insights as a practicing doctor and psychologist with over thirty years of experience.
February 22nd | Hosted by Adam & Becky Soto
These Friday evening gatherings occur at family homes in different neighborhoods of our community and provide parents the opportunity to discuss Charlotte Mason’s ideas that support their parenting. They are hosted in different geographical areas so everyone has the opportunity to attend.
Ambleside Evenings are a way for parents to support one another in caring for their children, build relationships together through food and fellowship, and become a stronger school community as we learn about how to bring the transformative power of Charlotte Mason’s method into our homes.
Each Evening includes a potluck supper and a guided discussion of how Charlotte Mason's method applies to parenting. Child care should be arranged for children at home.
Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF)
January 24th | 7-9 pm
This a community meeting for all parents and staff members. They are twice a year, usually scheduled for the Fall and Spring. PTFs are an invaluable opportunity to meet and build community with other parents, while hearing important information from the Head of School, administrative staff, teachers and the Ambleside Board or Trustees. It is mandatory for one parent to attend each PTF. Child care should be arranged for children at home if both parents attend.
This one-day training is facilitated by the professional staff of Ambleside Schools International (ASI), the same organization that supports our school in setting our curriculum and training our teachers. During this one day internship (approx. 8:15am -3:15pm), parents will explore texts central to Charlotte Mason’s pedagogy, observe teachers as they apply these principles, and see students thrive in a healthy, vibrant atmosphere, a consistent training in habit, and a curriculum rich with great books. There is a minimal cost for the day. This training day is optional but highly encouraged, especially for new parents.
December 21st | 6-9 pm
This is a special evening “Lessons and Carols” worship service celebrating the birth of Christ, through songs and Scripture reading. Students perform choral pieces they have mastered and share inspirational readings and recitations. For the program, students wear “their Christmas best,” (more details sent in early November about the specifics). Friends and extended families are welcome to attend this celebratory event honoring Christ’s birth. A reception of Christmas cookies and refreshments follows. All families typically attend this event. Childcare is provided.
November 9th | 9-11 am
This is a special Friday chapel, scheduled around Veteran’s Day, where the student community honors veterans, with special themed songs and recitations. A veteran guest speaker is invited to speak to the students. After the chapel, veterans, guests, and parents are invited to stay for a reception and veterans are invited to visit classrooms and participate in a Q&A session with the students. Most families make arrangements to attend this meaningful event and they are encouraged to invite veterans. Childcare is provided.
Fall Family Picnic
October 26th | 1-3:30 pm
Our Fall Picnic is a time for students to join in games, and families to share a picnic and enjoy a casual afternoon together. We encourage parents to take time off from work to attend the Fall Picnic. It is a great way to get to know other Ambleside families.
